Engage
With 8 years of experience working as an educator, I have seen and truly believe that all people have the potential for growth once their innate curiosity is activated. For me, the most important approach is the humanist one: respecting the autonomy of adult learners and the rich experience that they bring to the table. Furthermore, nurturing intrinsic motivation in learners is of utmost importance, since this is the key to sustained learning and satisfaction.
Challenge
Imagine a workplace that sees itself as a learning community. In this place, curiosity, critical thinking and reflective practice abound. People take risks and explore new approaches. They gladly pursue new learning endeavors, bringing innovations to their roles and community. Since learning is social and shared, everyone benefits.

Forget patronizing training modules and information dumps! As an instructional designer, I have the opportunity to engage people and help them find flexible, creative solutions to real challenges.
Transform
Learning should never end in a classroom. As such, I prioritize the following approaches in my design philosophy:
Focus on application → As Malcolm Knowles’ assumptions about andragogy emphasize, adult learners want their learning to be meaningful and immediately applicable. As such, I incorporate cognitivist strategies into my learning design (such as storytelling, activating prior knowledge, and spaced practice) to create lessons that are effective and memorable.

Contextual learning → In workplace learning, special attention must be given to context, and situated cognition approaches, such as role plays, case studies, and scenario-based learning, ensure that learning is relevant and transferable.

Inclusive design → Empathy is at the core of everything I do. Rather than basing lessons and interventions on my own preferences, I believe in conducting an in-depth learner analysis and intentionally seeking out diverse perspectives. When taking risks and learning something new, everyone has the right to feel supported, encouraged, and empowered!
